Matthiasson Wines

Matthiasson Wines was on our to-drink list long before winemaker and namesake Steve Matthiasson was ever named a James Beard Award Finalist for Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Professional. '

The winery is beautifully situated to the west of Highway 12, up the mountain just a bit so as to provide a sweeping panoramic view of the valley as we sipped and learned about each wine.

We love wines that are meant to complement food as well as tasting the odd varietal. Although, we found both at Matthiasson, we were a bit underwhelmed. Perhaps our expectations were too high? There was honestly nothing wrong with any of the wines—they were all entirely quaffable and reasonably priced—but nothing screamed, "take me home with you!” We’re intrigued to check out other wineries where Steve is a consultant including Ashes and Diamonds and Limerick Lane.
