Meadowcroft Wines

Pulling into the parking lot for Meadowcroft Wines had my expectations sinking. The tasting room is located in Cornerstone Sonoma, right across from Gloria Ferrer. It bills itself as a one-stop for tasting, eating, and shopping and I think it’s trying to be Brasswood but a majority of the storefronts stand empty.

I always wonder fi “reservations recommended” is trying to elicit a sense of urgency but this place really was hopping despite the off-season. We chose a table inside the one room barn-like structure and were presented with a glass of blanc-de-blanc to sip while we perused their menu. There were 10 wines on the list, and it was a pick four for $25pp (although tastings are currently complimentary through March 31st, 2024. Husband and I decided to share glasses so we could try all but two.

  • It was my first time trying French Colombard, and I found it to be floral with notes of kumquat and grapefruit.

  • The Pinot Noir was where I think we started to realize this was not your average tasting room. It wasn’t too fruit forward but had lovely notes of ripe cherries, black plums and a little baking spice.

  • Anyone who is a determined reader of mine will know I don’t love Cabernet Franc, but holy baking spices Batman! This was like cherry apple cranberry pie in a glass.

  • We ended up with three bottles of the Zinfandel, my husband’s favorite of the lot. It was spicy with notes of green bell pepper, green onion, stone fruits, and grapefruit. With the tannins and acid, we think it can stand to age a few years.

  • The Sangiovese was my favorite and we ended up with three bottles of it as well. I could just drink that all day. Baking spices, red fruit, vanilla bean. It’s good to drink now and would be perfect with a pizza or lasagna.

  • Both Cabernets were good and the Stag’s Leap was easily the better of the two but at $125/bottle we didn’t think it was a) twice as good as the other or b) worth the price tag.

This was not our usually nerdy experience with maps and clones and discussion about wine making techniques but we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the wines!
